At the Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Research Unit (SIERU), we are committed to advancing research that empowers communities across Scotland and beyond to thrive through social innovation and entrepreneurship. Situated within the University of Stirling, our Research Unit is a hub for mission-oriented research and policy engagement, designed to inform and influence practice at local, national, and international levels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Mission<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

SIERU\u2019s mission is to generate and share knowledge concerning innovative ideas, practices, products, or services that aim to improve the well-being and prosperity of individuals and communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of these ideas are located or delivered by social economy partners and new, values-led ventures. We support practitioners and policymakers to scale the capacity of these organisations to address the intertwined challenges of inequality, wellbeing, and environmental sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our research is closely aligned with Stirling University\u2019s mission-based approach, guiding our collaborative efforts with researchers, policymakers, and practitioners:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SPACES: Adapting to a Changing World<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We examine how community-led social innovation and entrepreneurship can tackle complex economic, social, technological, and environmental changes. Our work highlights the importance of resilience and agility in the face of evolving local and global challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PLACES: Building Resilient and Sustainable Communities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We focus on the development and scaling of inclusive, democratic, and sustainable business models\u2014including social enterprises, cooperatives, and community businesses\u2014that build local wealth and foster social cohesion. <\/a>Our research supports policymakers and practitioners in designing interventions that empower communities, encourages community and regional development, and promotes equitable, place-based prosperity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

LIVES: Enhancing Health and Wellbeing for All<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognising the vital role of entrepreneurs and community-led organisations in improving health and wellbeing, we investigate innovative approaches that address the factors in the socio-economic environment that favour or harm health. Our work supports the co-creation of policies and practices that promote wellbeing for people, communities, and the environment, and which aim to tackle structural inequalities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Approach<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

SIERU adopts a collaborative, interdisciplinary, and participatory approach. We work closely with academic partners, policymakers, and community stakeholders to co-design, evaluate, and scale social innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives that have real-world impact. We will frequently use an ‘ecosystem’ lens to understand the intricate array of actors, policies, and environmental factors necessary for success. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Impact<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through our research, we aim to inform policy, strengthen local economies, and support the resilience and effectiveness of inclusive, community-driven solutions. Our projects contribute to Scotland\u2019s ambition to be a global leader in entrepreneurship, social enterprise and social innovation to build a fairer, greener, wellbeing economy, while also learning from \u2013 and providing insights into \u2013 models adopted internationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
